Protein (and Peanut Butter) Matters

Ok, maybe peanut butter doesn’t matter as much, but seriously—protein matters! This may not be true for everyone but mornings are the time of day I feel least hungry, but use the most energy (during my workout). This makes it easy to skimp on protein and choose a lighter, less nutritional, fueling breakfast before my workout. That’s where this Peanut Butter Banana Date Smoothie with Protein makes an appearance in my day. It’s quick, easy, and of my favorite pre workout meals because it feels light, but is full of nutrient rich ingredients!

Feel free to jump to the recipe card! In the meantime—I’m going to give some tips, alternative ingredients, and steps on how to make this smoothie perfection!

Let’s Make This Smoothie

You’ll need, banana, oats, nut milk, dates, almonds, protein powder, peanut butter, ice, shredded coconut and ice!

Blend the banana, oats, ice, nut milk, dates, almonds, protein powder (Vital Proteins is my favorite), peanut butter, and shredded coconut until smooth and creamy. Pour and enjoy with a drizzle of peanut butter and a sprinkle of coconut! If you want an even better flavor, toast the coconut! If you don’t have a blender you love, I use the Vitamix and love it!

Like I said, this smoothie keeps me full for a long time, making it the perfect breakfast to take to-go and enjoy as you run errands, post workout, pre workout, work, go for a walk—whatever your day looks like.

Date Tips!

Dates are a fabulous natural sweetener with a smooth caramel-like flavor! You may have a couple questions about them and how they should be used!

The best types of dates to use are large medjool dates!

Pitting the dates is a must before throwing them in the blender.

If you soak the dates before using them, they blend a little bit smoother!

There are 100 calories in 5 dates (a serving).

Alternatives for the PB Banana Date Smoothie

Of course the way I make this smoothie is my favorite way! BUT there are many options or alternatives you can choose depending your preference!

This Peanut Butter Banana Date Smoothie is gluten free, dairy free, refined sugar free as it is! If you’re looking to swap out ingredients I’ll give few suggestions!

Peanut Butter Banana Date Smoothie Without Banana: I know banana isn’t everyone’s favorite smoothie add in. If that’s you, simply swap out the banana and add your favorite kind of fruit. If you’d prefer no fruit, that’s perfectly fine as well. The banana or fruit helps thicken the smoothie, so I’d suggest adding the nut milk slowly to avoid a runny smoothie when omitting that ingredient.

Nut Milk Suggestions: I know everyone has their preference when it comes to nut milk. I personally like this smoothie with unsweetened coconut or almond milk.

Omit the Peanut Butter: Although this smoothie calls for peanut butter—you can omit it, add a different kind of nut butter, or use a peanut butter substitute like PB2 Pure!

Adding More Protein: If you’re looking to add more protein to this smoothie—greek yogurt is great, an extra scoop of protein powder, or nuts/seeds with high protein content! The original recipe is made without yogurt to make it vegan and dairy free, but feel free to adjust to your likes and needs!
