I am a waffle girl through and through! Ask me any day of the week, any time, any place, I want waffles for breakfast. With that being said, I’m particular about my waffles! They need to be healthy, sweet, gluten free, refined sugar free, and crispy. So I guess you could say, I’m not the easiest to please when it comes to waffles. These Healthy Oat Flour Waffles pass the test with flying colors. And let me tell you—they go above and beyond! Naturally sweetened with bananas and maple syrup, made with oat flour and crisped to perfection—this recipe has become my go-to (the only recipe I’ll use) when it comes to waffles. Did I mention they’re just about the easiest thing to make? All you have to do is blend the ingredients, cook, and serve! 🧇

How to Make Healthy Oat Flour Waffles

These easy Oat Flour Waffles are a quick breakfast recipe. All you have to do is throw all of the ingredients in a blender or food processor!

Ingredients

  • Bananas
  • Eggs
  • 1 Cup Almond Milk
  • 2 Cups Gluten Free Rolled Oats blended
  • 2 Teaspoons Baking Powder
  • 1 Teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Salt
  • 1 Teaspoon Vanilla

Toppings (optional)

  • 1 Cup Mixed Berries fresh or frozen
  • 2 Tablespoons Maple Syrup
  • 1 Cup Greek Yogurt

Step-By-Step

Start by putting the 2 cups of oats in a food processor or blender. Blend the oats until they have a fine flour-like consistency. This should take about 1 minute of blending.

Once the oats are ground into flour, add the eggs, bananas, almond milk, baking powder, cinnamon, vanilla, and salt to the blender. Blend until smooth.

Let the batter sit for about 5 minutes while you preheat your waffle maker. Make sure to oil your waffle maker before pouring the mix on (I like to use coconut oil).

When the waffle maker is hot, add a scoop of batter onto the iron. I usually use 1/2 cup measuring cup to do this. Be careful not to overfill the iron or the batter will come out the sides. Cook the waffles until they are golden brown and crisp on the edges. My waffle maker has a light that turns green when they’re ready—it usually is about 4 minutes of cook time. This will all depend on the type of waffle maker you have! Keep in mind—if you open the waffle maker too early, the waffles won’t come out in one piece, so be patient!

Serve your oat flour waffles with your favorite toppings, such as fresh fruit, greek yogurt + maple syrup topping, nut butter, or toasted nuts, and enjoy a delicious breakfast!

My Favorite Variation of These Healthy Oat Flour Waffles

Citrus hints have become my favorite thing to add into recipes! So I like to make these into lemon orange zest waffles on occasion. The juice and zest adds so much flavor and freshness to a dish. If you love citrus flavors as well, try adding the zest & juice of 1 lemon & 1/2 orange to the batter. It’s super easy—simply add the juice and zest to the blender along with the other ingredients. Cheers to fun flavors & let me know what you think of this variation! 🍋🍊

Other Fun Variations!

High Protein Oat Waffles: To make these oat waffles into a high protein breakfast, scoop a serving of your favorite protein powder into the batter and top your waffles with Greek yogurt.

Fruity Waffles: I love adding fruity flavors to these waffles. Like I said before, my favorite combo is lemon and orange juice and zest! If that doesn’t sound like your jam, try adding apples, blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries to the batter once it’s been blended. You can also use any of these fruits as toppings!

Chocolate Waffles: I mean, who doesn’t love chocolate? If you’re a chocolate lover like me, try blending 2 Tablespoons of cocoa powder to the batter, and/or chocolate chips to the batter once it’s been blended!

Vegan Waffles: If you want to make these waffles vegan, you can use flaxseed! It can be substituted as the binder, which is the egg in this recipe. You can also make this recipe with no eggs and add 2 tablespoons more almond milk to the recipe.

Other Fun Toppings!

Greek Yogurt + Maple Syrup Topping: One of my forever favorite toppings—greek yogurt + maple syrup mixed into a delicious sauce. Just combine 1 cup Greek yogurt with 2 tablespoons of maple syrup, mix well, and it’s ready to go! It is the perfect finishing touch to these waffles. My mom used to make us a pancake topping growing up with sour cream and brown sugar. This combination is a healthier version of that—and in my opinion, just as good.

More Toppings: When it comes to waffles the toppings are pretty much endless and you can have fun adding any favorite topping of yours. Some more toppings I love: nut butters, any type of fruit, golden raisins, any kind of toasted nuts, chocolate chips, more maple syrup, honey, granola, peanut butter & jelly, coconut flakes, & that’s just naming a few.

How to Make Oat Flour at Home?

It’s seriously the most simple thing and way cheaper than buying oat flour at the store. To make oat flour at home, blend rolled oats in a food processor or blender until they reach a fine, flour-like consistency.

Can I Use An Oat Flour Substitute?

Yes! I like to use oat flour in this recipe, mainly for its flavor and binding effect, but any other flour or alternative flour will work. You can use almond flour, cassava flour, rice flour, coconut flour, all purpose flour, whole wheat flour, chickpea flour, or any other flour you prefer to cook with. You will still use 2 cups of flour in this recipe no matter the flour you choose.
